Effect of mutations on genes
A mutation is a change in the sequence of nucleotide in DNA. There are two categories of mutations:
Mutations are cause by mutagens, which are "physical or chemical agents that cause mutations." Mutations are harmful but can sometimes change a protein in a way in which that it may be good in certain environments.
- Base substitutions: "the replacement of one base or nucleotide with another"
- usually does not usually effect a protein but sometimes it can change the function of protein. The reason it does not effect the protein that much is because in the genetic code is because a lot of the amino acids have more that one codon, this is called "silent mutation."
